Care And Replacement Of Compression Garments And Bandages
Care And Replacement Of Compression Garments, Wraps, And Bandages
In order for your compression garments, sleeves, and bandages to be effective in treating lymphedema, they need to remain in good condition so that they can provide the proper amount of compression. By taking good care of your garments and bandages – and replacing them at regular intervals – you can help ensure that your lymphedema treatment is effective.
COMPRESSION GARMENTS AND WRAPS
Below are tips for how to care for compression wraps and garments in order to extend their useful lives.
Care Of Compression Garments And Wraps For Lymphedema
Here are recommendations for how to care for compression garments and wraps:
- You should always follow the manufacturer’s instructions when washing compression garments.
- Use a mild detergent or a detergent that’s designed for compression garment care (such as Jobst Jolastic, Juzo Wash, Variance, or Medi Organic).
- Don’t use Woolite, bleach or fabric softeners (these products relax the elastic fibers of the garment, which can weaken the compression).
- Don’t use a powdered laundry detergent (the soap can cling to the bandages and cause skin irritation).
Replacement Of Compression Garments And Compression Wraps For Lymphedema
Compression garments and compression wraps should be replaced every 3-6 months (because they eventually lose shape, which can change the pressure that’s applied).

Care Of Compression Bandages And Compression Sleeves For Lymphedema
Here are recommendations for how to care for compression bandages (tubular bandages, short stretch bandages, long stretch bandages, and compression sleeves):
- Wash your compression bandages every 2-3 days, or more frequently in warmer weather.
- Don’t use Woolite, bleach or fabric softeners (these products relax the elastic fibers, which can weaken the compression).
- Don’t use a powdered laundry detergent (the soap can cling to the bandages and cause skin irritation).
- If you’re machine-washing the bandages, put them in a lingerie bag to prevent them from becoming entangled.
- Dry the bandages by laying them flat, without tension, and avoid placing them in sunlight.
- After the bandages are dry, roll them tightly until you’re ready to put them back on your body.
- Don’t iron or cut the bandages.
- Don’t use clips to fasten the bandages (they can create holes); instead, use surgical or masking tape to hold the bandages in place.
